Nurul Ahad Choudhury and Pratima Saravanan reviewed 1,027 articles and analyzed 23 studies across healthcare, finance, law, and other professional settings. Across the studies, high workloads, repeated decisions, too many alternatives, and inadequate breaks were associated with decision fatigue, which can reduce decision quality and efficiency and increase reliance on the safest or easiest option.
In other words: Routine, repetitive decisions are not free; reducing avoidable friction from the banality of micro decisions can help people preserve their attention for the work that most requires their judgement.
