Clothing Choices Drive Perceptions of Competence
In a study by Oh, Shafir & Todorov (Princeton / Nature Human Behaviour, 2019), People judged individuals wearing wealth-signaling clothing as significantly more competent than the same individuals wearing lower-status clothing. The judgment occurred in milliseconds, and participants found it difficult to override the effect even when instructed to ignore clothing.
In other words: Clothing influences competence judgments independent of actual ability.
