A 2026 study published in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology used eye-tracking technology to examine how clothing influences who gets identified as a leader. Individuals dressed in formal clothing were more likely to be ascribed leadership status, with this effect being amplified when formal clothing was distinctive. Each additional percentage of visual fixation increased the odds of leadership status ascription by 16%.
